Selling

How do you work out what to pay me?

Three numbers: the weight of your piece, its purity from the XRF reading, and today’s spot price. Michael shows you all three on the counter before he makes an offer, so you can see exactly how the number was reached.

My jewellery is broken, tangled or has no stamp. Will you still buy it?

Yes. Broken chains, single earrings, bent rings and unmarked pieces are exactly what the XRF analyser is for. It reads the real metal content, so a missing or worn stamp doesn’t matter. Costume jewellery gets identified too, so you’ll know for sure.

Do I need to bring ID?

Yes, photo ID such as a driver licence or passport. NSW law requires every licensed second-hand dealer to verify who they’re buying from. It also protects you.

How do I get paid?

On the spot, before you leave, in cash or by bank transfer.

Can I get a price before I come in?

Send a photo on WhatsApp with any stamps you can see (9ct, 375, 18K, 750, 925 and so on) and a rough weight if you have one. Michael will give you a guide price. The final offer is confirmed once it’s weighed and tested.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Walk in during opening hours. If you’re bringing a large collection or coming from a distance, send a message first so Michael can set aside time.

Will the testing damage my piece?

No. XRF is non-destructive. There’s no acid, no scratching and no filing. It reads the metal through X-ray fluorescence in a few seconds and your piece comes back exactly as it went in.

What metals do you buy?

Gold in any carat (9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct, 24ct), sterling and fine silver, platinum and palladium. Jewellery, scrap, coins, bars and whole collections.

Watches

Can you replace my battery while I wait?

Usually, yes. Most battery changes are done on the spot in a few minutes. If a particular cell isn’t in stock, Michael orders it and calls you when it’s ready.

Do you work on luxury watches?

Yes. Michael services and repairs luxury and everyday watches, including Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Cartier, Longines, TAG Heuer, Tissot, Hamilton, Panerai, IWC, Seiko and Citizen. Hills Gold & Silver is an independent watch service and isn’t affiliated with these brands.

What else can you do?

Battery replacements, strap and bracelet sizing, servicing, repairs and restoration. Bring it in and Michael will tell you what it needs and what it will cost before any work starts.

Buying

What can I buy in store?

Gold and silver bullion, coins and rare collector pieces. Stock changes often, so message Michael with what you’re after and he’ll tell you what’s in the cabinet.

How are your sale prices set?

From the same live spot price shown on this site, plus a small premium that depends on the product. You’ll get the exact price before you commit.
